Jobs are Jails
« on: March 19, 2016, 09:45:35 AM »
Someone fwd'd this to me today:

Quote

There is a dangerous virus being passed electronically, orally and by hand. This virus is called Worm-Overload-Recreational-Killer (WORK). If you receive WORK from any of your colleagues, your boss or anyone else via any means DO NOT TOUCH IT. This virus will wipe out your private life completely.

If you should come into contact with WORK, put your jacket on and take two good friends to the nearest bar. Purchase the antidote known as Work-Isolator-Neutralizer-Extractor (WINE) or Bothersome-Employer-Eliminator-Rebooter (BEER). Take the antidote repeatedly until WORK has been completely eliminated from your system.

You should pass on this warning to 5 friends. If you do not have 5 friends, you have already been infected and WORK is controlling your life.

I think that's the point. In this world, you are born owing money every month of your life. There is no escape except to get rich, which requires engaging in mass tedium and possibly corrupting yourself by having to think like the zombies.

Honest work is a good thing. A mania for working all the time is a psychological problem. Jobs, like school, are designed to accommodate equal idiots and so they are mediocre and boring in addition to being fraught with terrors like workplace sociopathic behavior, controlling bosses, public image and trying not to murder others for their stupidity.

The structure of work is a controlling social structure.  That is, the system isn't designed to optimize your actual work performance.  (EG.  Kids are sent to school on a schedule asynchronous tot heir times of maximum mental acuity.).  The work system is designed to keep the maximum number of people in their veal fattening pens during certain periods of time.    When you look at what a system accomplishes, you get a good idea of what it was designed to actually do.

There was also a period when providing the most jobs made a company the most legitimate. If you don't make a bazillion jobs then you are just a glamor company there to be the private piggy bank of a few corrupt investors. It was soon realized that this in turn gave such a company incredible power over the people. Keep coming in to make our mega-multi-national company look legitimate and we will pay you enough to feed yourself and afford an overpriced but gated apartment (hence the price tag) and you can get a credit card for the rest. Meanwhile, we will be pocketing the rest of the money and leaving you to deal with incompetents who we can't legally fire without proving are racist, sexist or violent in the workplace.
